Sketch: A Church Window at Rockcliffe (detail)
Ink on cartridge paper

This sketch of the detail of a carved-stone church window at Rockcliffe in northern Cumbria was done on a very cold day, which is one of the reasons it stops where it does.

Not only does drawing and painting make one appreciate the natural objects of the world in a profound way by drawing one’s attention to every detail, it also raises in one a great respect for the industry and ingenuity of craftsmen and their artefacts. This window has extraordinary workmanship displayed, but one can easily walk past without noticing this fact.
